The university town of Cambridge is a city in East Anglia and has a population of just over 100,000, with students accounting for about 20% of that figure. The city is dominated by university buildings including the Cavendish Laboratory, University Library, King’s College Chapel and St John’s College Chapel in the north. The University is the second oldest in the UK and seventh oldest in the world. Established in 1209 by two Oxford scholars, it is one of the most highly regarded educational institutions throughout the western world and maintains a strong rivalry with Oxford University. The first settlements in Cambridge date back to before Roman times, although it wasn’t until 1068 when William of Normandy built a castle on Castle Hill, that the city began to grow in significance. After the foundation of the University the town grew more however it took until 1951 for it to be awarded city status. Today, Cambridge is often referred to as being the capital of Silicon Fen, a twist on Silicon Valley, due to the high technology industry that has sprung up in and around the city in various science parks. Microsoft Research UK is located in one of the technology parks in Cambridge.
