Located on the River Stour in South East England, Canterbury is an English city in Kent. Settlement there dates back to before Roman times and historical structures are scattered throughout the city today. The city wall dates to Roman times, St Augustine’s Abbey was founded around 597AD and the King’s School is one of the oldest schools in England. Canterbury, however, is perhaps most famous for its Episcopal see and the Archbishop of Canterbury, who heads the Church of England. The murder of Tomas Becket in 1170 led to the Cathedral becoming a place of pilgrimage for Christians and provided the theme behind the Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century. The city of Kent has the second largest economy in Kent and in 2001 was worth around £1.3 billion. Tourism is a large source of revenue for Canterbury, making up around a quarter of the city’s economy. Attractions include the Cathedral, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. Also in Canterbury are the ruins of St. Augustine’s Abbey, St. Martin’s Church, the ruins of the Norman Canterbury Castle and the Roman Museum that houses mosaics dating back to around 300AD.
