The City of Carlisle is in the county of Cumbria in the North West of England, the second most northerly city in the country, lying just south of the border with Scotland in the flood plain of the River Eden. The city takes its name its largest settlement Carlisle and has a population of over 100,000. In terms of area, Carlisle is the largest city in England although most of it is rural and sparsely populated. The city’s history began in the 1st century with a Roman outpost and Hadrian’s Wall. The Danes destroyed the settlement that had grown from this outpost in 875AD and it became part of Scotland until 1092, when King William II of England built Carlisle Castle. The Cathedral in Carlisle was founded in 12th century and is one of the smallest in the UK. The industrial revolution and Carlisle’s position as a border town led to it becoming a great railway city in the 19th century. Built in 1847, the Carlisle Citadel Station is a magnificent building, still standing to today at the end of the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway that spans 72 miles across the north of England.
