Granted its status in 1541, Chester is a city on the River Dee in Cheshire close to the Welsh border. Today home to almost 80,000 people, Chester is steeped in history and has several examples of medieval and Victorian architecture and its listed grade I walls are still almost all standing today. Chester was founded in 79AD as a Roman fort and the four main roads running through the city follow the routes laid at this time. Before being fortified by the Saxons after the 5th century, Chester was being a major settlement in the Roman province Britannia. Over a thousand years later, Chester was one of the last towns to fall to the Normans in their conquest of England. Like many northern towns, Chester experienced significant population increase in the 19th century with the industrial revolution and the development of industry and infrastructure in the form of canals, railways and roads. Today, Chester is undergoing massive development and regeneration under a £1.3 billion plan announced in 2007 by Chester Council. The project, nicknamed Chester Renaissance, has since been put on hold until 2012, although several developments are still ongoing in the city.
