Chichester is a cathedral city in the county of West Sussex in South East England and has a population of just fewer than 25,000. The city was a Roman bridgehead for their invasion of Britain and is home to some of the oldest buildings in the UK, along with a 12th century cathedral. To this day the city shows the signs of Roman design, with the streets set out in a cross like shape. Chichester is located on the River Lavant, a winterbourne that’s located in the South Downs. The Chichester Conservation Area encompasses the whole of the old Roman town and includes many Grade I and II listed buildings, all designated for their architectural and historical significance. As a major tourist attraction there are dozens of sights to see around Chichester. The 12th century cathedral was largely rebuilt in the 19th century as the spire, made of weak local stone, collapsed. The cathedral holds the tomb of a medieval knight and his wife and a grand statue of William Huskisson, the first man ever to be run over by a railway engine. The remains of a Roman amphitheatre are buried under a park in the city, although its bank is clearly visible. Other sightsinclude the 19th century Corn Exchange in East Street, one of the first in the country, and the Chichester Cross, built in 1501 as a covered market place in Chichester’s centre.
