Coventry is the 9th largest city in England and a metropolitan borough in the West Midlands. With a population of over 300,000 it is also the second largest city in the county in terms of people. It’s situated just 19 miles east of Birmingham and as a result is not part of the Core Cities group despite its size. Coventry is also further from the coast than any other city in the country. The city itself is ancient and far older than neighboring Birmingham or Leicester and dates back to Bronze Age times. Roman, Saxon and Norman settlements have all been located in and around Coventry although it wasn’t until the 14th century that the city became significant in terms of trade and economy. The cloth trade that sprung up throughout the Middle Ages was one of the greatest in England and in 1345 was granted city status. Watch and clock manufacture is also historically linked with Coventry and during the 18th and 19th the city became one of the three major centers of watch and clock manufacturing in the UK. As this industry declined, bicycle, motorbike and car manufacture took its place. After suffering severely during the Second World War, Coventry’s post war industry boomed with machine tools and car manufacture leading the golden age. In terms of architecture, Coventry lost a great deal of its medieval to German bombs and the Cathedral is one of the newest in the world.
