In the East Midlands, lying on the banks of the River Derwent and in the south of county Derbyshire is the city of Derby. In the 2001 census the population was 233,700 and is the 18th largest settlement in England. The city has Roman roots and evidence of Viking and Anglo Saxon settlements has also been found. The industrial revolution saw Derby become a centre of commerce and industry and 1717 saw the first water powered silk mill set up in Derby. The turn of the next century saw Derby emerge as a centre for engineering and by 1840 North Midland Railway had set up its works in the city. Despite this, it wasn’t until 1977 that Derby was awarded city status on 7th June. Today Derby is a cultural centre for the deaf community in the UK and has a strong sign language using community, estimated to be three times larger than the national average. The Royal School for the Deaf is located on Ashbourne Road in the city, providing education in English and British Sign Language. The two major employers in the city are both engineering companies; Rolls Royce and Toyota.
