The town of Dudley is located in the West Midlands and has a population of just fewer than 200,000, making it the second largest town in the UK and the largest settlement without its own university. Just south if Wolverhampton, Dudley is part of the West Midlands conurbation, deep inside the Black Country. Dudley’s history dates back to the 11th century when Dudley Castle was mentioned in the Domesday Book. The present castle is actually from around 2 centuries later and was the centre around which the town grew. The ruins of St James Priory, located in Priory Park, date back to the 12th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, like many towns in the UK, Dudley industrialised and its population grew rapidly. The industries at the forefront of Dudley’s expansion were coal and limestone mining although other industries included iron and steel manufacturing, engineering, glass cutting and textiles. Today the town centre is made up of a variety of new and old, with buildings dating back to the 18th century. Largely due to the development of the Merry Hill Shopping Centre, just outside of Dudley, the centre has few leading brand names and many vacant lots. The global recession has hit the area hard also and in January 2010, the last department store in Dudley town centre closed its doors.
