Located around 14 miles north east of Cambridge and in Cambridgeshire, Ely is a cathedral city in England. With a population of just over 15,000, Ely is the third smallest city in the UK and was only granted city status in 1974. Ely’s history dates back to 673AD and the foundation of an abbey in the area, which was later destroyed by Danish invaders. Almost a thousand years later, Oliver Cromwell held the position of tax collector in Ely and is home is used today by the Tourist Information Office, open as a museum and information centre. Until the 18th century, Ely was an important port town, lying on the River Great Ouse although the draining of the Fens saw an end to this. The city retains a handful of historic buildings and the market is still held twice weekly. The River Great Ouse was also the only river to host the Boat Race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, holding the race in 1944. To this day, the river is a popular boating area and the University of Cambridge is known to train there for their annual boat race and have a boathouse on the river.
