Kingston upon Hull, or Hull as it is usually referred to, is a city in the East Riding of Yorkshire, located on the River Hull in the Humber Estuary, around 25 miles from the North Sea. Founded in the late 12th century by King Edward I, Kingston upon Hull was finally granted city status in 1897. The city grew as a port and a market town, trading wool from local abbeys and settlements over the next few centuries. Throughout the 19th century, Hull played a major part in the migration of Northern Europeans to the New World, with travellers stopping in Hull before proceeding to Liverpool and America. Due to Hull’s strategic location close to mainland Europe, Hull suffered serious bombing during World War II. In the years after the war, the city suffered a long period of post industrial decline gaining an unfortunate reputation as an example of social deprivation. Despite this, in recent years, Hull has undergone a large redevelopment program, embarking on an extensive programme of regeneration. The new £165 million Humber Quays development recently gained World Trade centre status. In another blow to the region however, the emergency budget of June 2010 saw the Yorkshire Forward regeneration agency abolished, meaning funding for the Hull Forward programme was stopped.
