The City of Lancaster is home to just under 140,000 people and takes its name from the county town of Lancashire in the northwest of England. With its unique ties to the British monarchy, Lancaster is the city that gives Lancashire its name. The House of Lancaster, with its iconic red rose, was a branch of the royal family and the monarch is the Duke of Lancaster. Lancaster became a city in 1937 as a reward for its ‘long association with the crown’. The first known mention of a settlement in Lancaster was in the Domesday Book in 1086, where it appeared in the form of Loncastre meaning ‘fort on the River Lune’. Lancaster Castle stands on the site of a Roman garrison. The building dates back to the 13th century and is the site of the infamous Pendle witch trials of 1612. Traditionally a market town and borough, Lancaster gained its first charter in 1193. In the 1800s the town grew as a port, becoming the fourth most important in the UK in regards to the Atlantic slave trade. This notoriety was short lived however as the River Lune began to silt up and today the city is primarily service orientated although recently a high technology sector has begun to immerge.
