Leeds can trace its history to the fifth century, although it was little more than an agricultural settlement until the Tudor period and the 1600s when it became established as a cloth trading town, situated strategically on the York to Chester route. With the Industrial Revolution in the 17th and 18th century, Leeds rapidly became a major industrial centre with the woolen cloth trade still the pinnacle sector.
