Newcastle upon Tyne, or Newcastle for short, is a city in the North East of England located on the north bank of the River Tyne and is home to just fewer than 300,000 people. The city takes its name from a Castle built in the 11th century by the Duke of Normandy although its roots go back to a Roman settlement around a thousand years earlier. Initially a centre for wool trade, Newcastle developed as a port town in the 16th century, soon becoming one of the world’s leading shipbuilding and repair centres. Coal mining became a major industry in the 19th century although these industries have since declined. Today, Newcastle is a hub for business and culture with a special reputation for nightlife. Famous for the Tyne Bridge, the Angel of the North and St. James’ Park, the city has many iconic buildings and structures.
