The City of Norwich is the county town of Norfolk and home to over 135,000 people. The city’s built up area extends beyond Norwich’s boundary and into Cotessey, Hellesdon, Old Catton and Thorpe St Andrew, encompassing a population of just under 370,000. Settlement in the area dates back to Roman times, although the course of Norwich’s development is still debated upon today. The city was a hub of commerce and trade during the 7th and 8th century, at which point it was raided by Viking invaders. By the 1086 the city was arguably England’s second, with trade along the River Wensum and River Yare, through Great Yarmouth boosting Norwich’s economy. After the industrial revolution, shoe making led the manufacturing industry’s boom in the city, although industrialisation came late to the area due to the lack of natural resources. Today Norwich’s economy is centred on services and finances with Aviva, formerly known as Norwich Union, a major employer. Tourism is also a major source of revenue for Norwich with attractions including the museums of old Norwich, the cobbled streets and Norwich Cathedral. The city is one of the UK’s top ten shopping destinations, with one of the largest outdoor markets in the UK and a mix of chain retailers and independent stores.
