Stoke on Trent, or Stoke as it is commonly known, is a city in Staffordshire, England. The Potteries Urban Area, which Stoke is a part of, has a population of just over 450,000. The city is widely regarded as the home of the pottery industry in the UK, although today Stoke’s industry is centered on the service sector. Stoke was granted city status in 1925 although is actually made up of 6 towns. The city took its name from Stoke, primarily because it its mainline railway station. The Alton Towers theme park is just ten miles south of Stoke, attracting almost three million visitors a year.
