With its population of 280,000, the City of Sunderland is relatively new, granted its status in 1992. It takes its name after its largest settlement but covers an area including the towns on Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton-le-Spring and Washington. Sunderland is situated at the mouth of the River Wear in Tyne and Wear in North East England. Historically, Sunderland was a small fishing village, which was granted its first charter in 1179. Over the millennium the settlement grew as a port, trading predominantly coal and salt and by the 14th century a ship building industry had sprung up also. By the 1800s Sunderland had absorbed the surrounding settlements of Bishopwearmouth and Monkwearmouth and become the largest shipbuilding town in the world. Expansion to the Port of Sunderland in the 1850s saw the construction of the Hudson Dock, where the famous ship Torrens was built, in which author Joseph Conrad sailed whilst writing his first novel. After the Second World War demand for coal dropped, devastating the local economy. The shipping industry collapsed and the coal mines shut. Despite this, in recent years, the situation has improved following significant foreign investment like the Nissan factory to the south west of the city, which opened in 1986. Local Government also invested heavily, transforming many of the former shipyards into residential and commercial areas.
