The large suburban town of East Kilbride is located in the West Central Lowlands of Scotland in the South Lanarkshire area. East Kilbride was Scotland’s first designated ‘new town’ and forms part of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. The White Cart River in the west and the Rotten Calder to the ast enclose the town on what is a patch of high ground, previously home to a small, historic village until its post war development, which saw the creation of towns around Glasgow to deal with severe shortages in housing stock. In East Kilbride’s town centre are six malls, linked to form a large shopping complex, known locally as ‘the Centre’. Recently the shopping centre has come under fire for losing several major retailers as a result of the rise in the cost of rent. On a brighter note, a £400 million redevelopment of the town centre has been given the go ahead, with plans to demolish some of the existing buildings and create a new civic centre, state of the art  centre, library and extra shopping centre. A landmark arts a culture centre is also planned, with a 1,000 seat theatre, a conference centre, museum and town square.
