Located on the northern coast of the Bristol Chanel in the Vale of Glamorgan, Barry is a town and seaside resort in the south of Wales. The population of Barry is just fewer than 50,000, making it Wales’ largest, situated just a few miles south west of Cardiff. The town is probably most famous for being the setting for BBC series Gavin and Stacey. Barry is also the birthplace of the current Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard. Until the late 19th century, Barry was little more than an agricultural community. After the 1880s however, the town began to develop as a coal port. Suddenly, the industry exploded and it became clear the trade was growing faster than facilities at Tiger Bay in Cardiff ever could. As a result, the Barry Railway Company was formed and began to build the docks in Barry. By 1913, the town was the world’s largest coal exporting port. Today, having lost the majority of heavy industry, Barry’s economy is based upon manufacture and lighter industries, along with tourism and the service sector. Magnificent views over the Bristol Channel, the National Museums and Galleries of Wales and the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagan’s are all must see sights for tourists visiting this wonderful town.
